	Customer Reviews: Average Rating: Rating : - A dark, but great novel by Henry Gregor Felsen Henry Gregor Felsen is known for his adolescent targeted car novels: "Hot Rod", "Street Rod", and "Crash Club" being the most famous. The ex-Marine authored numerous other military, automotive-related, and juvenile books - both fiction and non-fiction. The thread that runs through his work is highway safety, family and community values, midwestern work ethic, and patriotism. Sounds boring, but in Felsen's hands it's not. "Rag Top" is the darkest of his works. Only marginally a youth-targeted work. It is hard-hitting and bare-knuckle violent. There are issues of domestic violence, brutal battery, organized crime, theft/robbery, lies, scheming, and even rape. The fast moving story is hard to put down, yet at times I picked it up with a little bit of dread due to the situations of despair that had developed within the story. This is much more than just a "car book". Felsen was a very good author and did his job with issues such as character development and continuity. I'm intentionally avoiding giving away any of the story in my review, but I will hint that this book varies from Felsen's bent toward teen car novel preachiness in that the endpoint in this tale is not some rededication to safe driving . . . it is a much more profound message addressing broad foundational matters of good and evil and how we all live out our lives. The principle character in the novel, Link Aller, reaches the bottom of despair and verbalizes a broken and genuine prayer to God for deliverence. A scene very well developed and delivered by the author. In the end, Felsen delivers another one of his signature breathtaking endings -- with Henry Gregor Felsen, this can be either a soaring happy ending, or a shocking and heartbreaking bad one . . . you won't know until you finish the last page. This is a great novel, and for some reason very obscure. It's old (1954), but Felsen's other car novels written in the same era are rather famous and have a cult following. I love Henry Gregor Felsen's work, and this was perhaps his best. A superb piece of storytelling. A couple of more notes. "Rag Top" is a continuation of the novel, "Street Rod". I recommend that the reader read "Street Rod" first. "Rag Top" was first published in hardcover under the title, "The Cup of Fury". But the more famous Upton Sinclair published a novel with that same title within months of Felsen's work. I do not know the details of that situation, but Felsen's "The Cup of Fury" then became "Rag Top", in paperback. + See Full Customer Review
