This is a shell case which protects only the game console and can be played with it on as opposed to a bag or box container which you put it inside for safekeeping. Also available in pink Nintendo DS Lite Armor Case - The Metal Case (Shimmery Pink). Purchased this case recently and threw it onto my DS lite. When the DS is closed it works great. The case is fitted and lined with neoprene foam to prevent contact with the metal. The holes cut into the case to allow access to the buttons and ports are good, cut finger width sized around the switches for easy use. When closed the only part of it that can directly hit the floor if dropped are the Left and Right buttons (without going through a hole) which are exposed in all shell cases (can't use the buttons otherwise). However when the DS is opened for use, the top cover does not move with the flip top of the DS. You pretty much leave the top hanging down while playing with it. There are some clear plastic cases such as Crystal Case Nintendo DS Lite, Clear that do cover it while open but the one I've seen was prone to scratches and can break much easier (Plastic is weaker then metal. Surprising huh?). Also available are the Nerf foam cases Nintendo DS Lite Nerf Armor - black/red (several colors schemes available) which should protect well but are bulky or the silicone skins which are probably more on the opposite end of the scale (thin but less protection). Minor downsides of this case would be changing the game cartridge since its behind the hinge is harder to take out but not extremely so (can just easily slip the case off if necessary). The hinge would prevent a game from accidentally falling out, which is admittedly unlikely. Also if you close the case incorrectly you may put minor scratches on the front. I too like the slight heft of the case but it can be a disadvantage if you plan on holding up your DS for long periods of time. Selection would be best according to what you want out of it.
