"A Little Less 'Sixteen Candles,' a Little More 'Touch Me,'" "I Slept with Someone in Fall Out Boy and All I Got Was This Stupid Song Written About Me" and "Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year" are but a small taste of the group's acerbic attitude. After FOB's indie debut hit the underground charts, the group's sudden indie-style success made for a fast growth spurt. Their appeal is obvious, from frontman Patrick Stump's Killer-esque pipes (especially evidenced in the disc-closing "XO") to their very melodic teen-angst anthems. While much of the disc operates at usual punk-pop speed, the highlight comes from a slower, emotion-laden cut called "I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth." While I am guilty of having a preconceived notion of what this band is all about, I can definitely say now that this stuff is light years ahead of the type of garbage put out by bands like Good Charlotte and Panic! At The Disco. The album is full of hidden gems (Our Lawyer..., 7 Minutes in Heaven, Sophmore Slump...) as well as the hits you'll hear on the radio (Sugar, W're Going Down, Dance Dance, A Little More...). In fact, there really isn't a bad song on here. From start to finish, you'll be hit with catchy guitar rifs, great choruses, and so forth. What also works really well is the sequence in which the songs are slotted, giving the whole listening experience great continuity. While you can make the argument that the songs can be formulaic and similar to one another, you can't discount the musicianship on display here. The vocals and drumming are excellent throughout, and the lyrics are inspired, emotional, and often very clever. This band is a winner and this is truly an excellent, 5 star album that ranks alongside New Found Glory's "New Found Glory" and Blink-182's "Enema of the State" as the best of the pop-punk genre.
