Angel Eyes is a mature and levelheaded drama about real people with authentic emotions, clawing through their own hurt and confusion toward a hopeful recovery. In a subtly effective performance as Chicago cop Sharon Pogue, Jennifer Lopez is both gutsy and vulnerable, using her badge as a shield against a past incident of domestic violence that left her estranged from her family and alone with her conviction that good deeds are not always rewarded. It seems, at first, that Gerald Di Pego's script will turn in a supernatural direction--or at least a metaphysical one--but it doesn't, and director Luis Mandoki navigates an emotional minefield while acknowledging the walls that people build between themselves and the traumatic events they wish to forget. Catch has kept a deliberate distance between himself and a tragedy that Sharon had witnessed--not a repressed nightmare, but a devastating loss from which he will, eventually, recover. That these two characters should rediscover each other at a time of mutual need is not a contrived coincidence. Rating : - An Underrated Masterpiece
Most people would probably wonder how the words "masterpiece" and "Jennifer Lopez" could possibly go together, but there you have it - "Angel Eyes" is a little gem of a film, hardly known even to many Jennifer Lopez fans themselves, as it plays out more like a taut independent film rather that a big studio-sponsored endeavor.

This is one film that really surprised me, and till date is only one of four movies I can watch over and over on repeat - I never tire of it. The primary reason for this is because this is not really a romance or a 'chick flick'. Its a very mature story about two adults who have been horribly hurt by their pasts, and who use each other in the most positive way possible to grow and blossom. It is absolutely gritty, real and spares no awkward emotion in making us believe that these are real people with real problems.

No fan of Lopez here, but her nuanced performance made me realize that she is definitely an actress who should have won awards for this role. She is tremendously expressive, and towards the end of the movie, she is spectacular. My personal favorite scene was the climax, where the writers could have made a 'happy ending', but instead its a sad, true depiction of what happens even in the best families today. Just so amazing.

Jim Caviezel, who was never a great actor to begin with, uses his silent presence to his advantage. Everything about this film just works, and even if you think that you may not be a 'slow movie' kind of person, you will enjoy this. Its sad that people often overlook this once they see that picture of J-Lo on the cover, but this really is a fine piece of film-making, comparable to the greatest films ever made (it really is THAT good).

Five Stars. A Classic in my home.
